Abbots Grange
Broadway, Worcestershire
For lovers of art and history, the Taee family's adults-only B&B in parkland, built in the 14th century for the Abbot of Pershore and restored by genre painter F.D. Millet under William Morris's guidance, deserves every one of its five stars for its blend of superb modern hospitality and first-class facilities, with antique-filled interiors.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
When Broadway teems with tourists, this adults-only B&B, in parkland, just off the High Street, ‘offers a perfect escape’, writes an inspector. ‘History seeps from the exposed stone walls and flagstone floors’ of a house built in the 1300s for the Abbot of Pershore and now home to the Taee family. Guests are welcomed with champagne by ‘affable manager’ Stacey Taee and offered afternoon tea under the vaulted ceiling of the Great Hall, which provided the backdrop for ‘Between Two Fires’ by American genre painter Francis Davis Millet. Millet restored the Grange under William Morris’s direction; the painting survives in Tate Britain. ‘The pulpit honesty bar in a tiny room off the hall is a fun place to enjoy a drink.’ Main-house bedrooms have an antique four-poster. The oak-panelled Elizabethan Suite has a real fire, a stone ensuite with bath and drench shower. John Singer Sargent and Claude Monet rooms recall former visitors. Coach-house rooms are more contemporary; all are wonderful. In a deeply atmospheric breakfast room, the menu included ‘delicious truffle-dusted mushrooms on sourdough’, a full English, smoked Bibury trout, Grimsby kippers. ‘A very special and distinctive place.’
