Rolling countryside surrounds this large Georgian house in extensive grounds of meadows and woodland; a tunnel leads to the river Wylye. Part of the Kaleidoscope Collection (see Homewood and The Bird, Bath), the family-friendly hotel has a 'lively and busy spa' plus heated outdoor pool and a large hot tub. Indoor types can relax by a warming fire in one of the 'grand and comfortable rooms with plenty of seating and quirky, interesting things to look at'. Canine guests can test their skills on the dog agility course. Bedrooms vary in size from snug spaces to duplex suites. 'Room 14 was a bit of a hike but was much larger than imagined and was individual and attractive.' A modern menu including a 'really good cheese soufflé and a large portion of sea bass' is served in the restaurant, where large windows look out over the terrace and garden. (Carol Jackson)
