A long-time Guide favourite, the Chazal family's 'seriously good' small hotel/restaurant is on the main street of a pleasant market town in the Auvergne. One daughter, Hélène, is chef; her sister, Agnès, runs the front desk; Agnès's husband Christian is in the bar. Visitors were impressed by the welcome and value: 'The receptionist even walked up the hill with us to show us the private parking.' Other praise: 'Charming, friendly.' 'Unpretentious, warm-hearted.' 'What a delight to be in the company of the Chazal family.' 'The jewel is the restaurant' ('packed each night with locals'): 'We had the top menu, which included pan-fried foie gras with a pear compôte; lotte with a magnificent Puy lentil sauce; boned quail with cèpes. A basket of walnuts and another of fruit were left on the table — such rare generosity!' On half board, guests choose from any menu. Breakfast is 'an excellent buffet'. Some bedrooms are small, but most are a good size, and all were renovated in 2015. Quietest rooms (with balcony) are up the hill in an annexe, 'warm and comfortable', which has a garden. Guests may use the outdoor swimming pool of the family's other, pricier hotel, La Sapinière, 'central but quiet'.
