Adelboden, one of the older Swiss ski resorts in the western part of the Bernese Oberland, has changed little over the years, nor has this holiday hotel, now run by the third generation of the Richard family. 'Ideal in all seasons', according to fans, it has splendid mountain views. In the large grounds are old trees, a spa, a heated saltwater outdoor swimming pool in which you can swim while snow falls; and there is an 'outstanding' indoor pool. Buses, gondolas and a two-horse charabanc can be taken for trips to local villages, and 'splendid walks' are all around. The buffet breakfast, taken on the garden terrace in fine weather, is 'ample and varied'. The restaurant, under chef Jürgen Willing, serves a seasonal menu and always has a vegetarian option and a salad course, and there is an extensive wine list. Staff are found 'charming'; most are tri-lingual. 'Classic' rooms are newly-renovated and very stylish; the spacious bedrooms have sofa and easy chairs; many with large windows offering mountain views or a terrace.
