Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
With unspoilt views over the Charente from its dining terrace, this 19th-century gentilhommière stands among oak trees (yeuses). It has a 'romantic atmosphere', say fans, despite a 'slightly incongruous modern extension'. It attracts visitors to the brandy towns of Cognac and Jarnac (free tours of distilleries, with tastings, can be arranged). Public rooms, traditionally furnished, have large mirrors and chandeliers. In the 'cognathèque', there is a 'remarkable selection' of local brandies, and a vast range of Havana cigars. There's a great restaurant, too. 'All the staff were helpful.' 'A good buffet breakfast.' Bedrooms, though not large, are comfortable. 'The immediate area is a bit boring', but Saintes, with the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, is near.
