This fin-de-siècle villa is a former home of the parfumier Pierre Guerlain. “Winningly eccentric”, it has a “pieds-dans-l”eau position” on the north side of the Somme estuary (excellent birdwatching and “very special, pearly light”). Its owners have created a “chic Nordic feel”. French families crowd it in holiday time, creating “cheerful mayhem”. “Pure Monsieur Hulot; we loved it,” said one couple. “Room 4 was superb: lovely views.” The dark red exterior is crowned by two blue pointed turrets; interiors are “balneo-rustic”: wooden floors, sculptures made from driftwood, wooden boats, the odd rococo antique and chandelier. “Loads of books and scrapbooks.” Front bedrooms are the priciest. In the “dortoir matelots”, adventurous children can sleep away from their parents. The restaurant serves “good-value, well-cooked” meals with the accent on seafood, but service can be pressed at times.
