A 'sprawling, traditional building in a beautiful setting' at the tip of Windermere, this family and dog-friendly hotel has a spa and easy access to lake-based activities. Bedrooms have bold patterned wallpaper, oversized headboards, and minibar; loft suites have an electric log-burner, an in-room bath, a super-king bed with pop-up TV. Our inspectors enjoyed the soup of the day in the pub, which had 'soft-furnished chairs, beautiful reclaimed wood flooring, floral-print wallpaper'. The brasserie has dishes such as pan-fried fillets of sea bass or roasted lamb rack, while coffee, cakes, panini and Buddha bowls are served in 'a delightful café with a baby-pink retro coffee machine'.
