Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
‘It had everything we look for,’ write trusted readers after a stay at the D’Allen family’s hotel, set in subtropical gardens with views over Lyme Bay. Room choices range from a standard double with roof terrace to four-poster hot-tub suites. ‘Our deluxe room was large, beautifully decorated and well equipped.’ Once home to genre painter John Callcott Horsley, designer of the first Christmas card, the 1830s house has a colonial aspect (leather, rattan, potted palms). Locally sourced menus include dishes such as braised beef cheek; stone bass with caper beurre noisette, squid ink crisp. The staff are ‘attentive and pleasant’. After ‘a very good cooked breakfast’, the Coast Path and red-sand beach is a stroll away.
