Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
A five-minute walk from Another Place (see entry), this beautifully refurbished, dog-friendly roadside pub shares not just the peerless views over Ullswater, but all of its big sister’s facilities. Launched in April 2024, it’s a work in progress (plans include a microbrewery, kitchen garden, orchard, events meadow and children’s play area), but it will do very nicely for now. The interiors draw inspiration from Lakeland literature, while furniture has been sourced from antique shops in Penrith, bought at auction or commissioned from Cumbrian craftsmen. Persian rugs, books, board games, blazing fires, armchairs, snug alcoves and a warm palette of greens and burnt orange contribute to the welcoming ambience. Bedrooms, including a single, have an iron bedstead, subtle candy paint shades. All but one have a lake view. The food is hearty pub grub for fell walkers and wild swimmers – venison burger, steak and ale pie, lamb shank, fish and chips, sticky toffee pudding. Locals come for the pie nights, steak nights, quiz nights, live music nights, Wainwright ales on draught and Sunday roasts (or vegan shepherd’s pie), happy at the revival of a community hub.
