The rustic aspect to this creeper-clad pub, with roadside picnic tables and planters, belies the rather smart interiors. In a pretty Peak District village at the heart of the Chatsworth estate, it is very much a pub but with an upmarket edge to it – it is part of the Devonshire Hotels collection styled by the Duchess of Devonshire. First-floor bedrooms are graded petite, classic and deluxe, but best of all are plush, dog-friendly four-poster rooms in a farmhouse just moments away. Each has a hand-picked selection of books. Estate produce from the Chatsworth farm shop in the village is used extensively in dishes ranging from pub classics such as haddock and chips to vegetable wellington or lamb rump and shoulder with confit potatoes.
