The Pig in the Cotswolds
Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Formerly Barnsley House, this 17th-century stone manor house became part of the Pig group in the summer of 2024, offering the expected interesting mix of rooms and hideaways, a 25-mile menu using an abundance of home-grown produce, and the bonus of beautiful gardens created by the renowned Rosemary Verey.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
This 17th-century stone mansion – formerly Barnsley House – became the latest addition to the fast-breeding Pig family in summer 2024. It follows the much-loved formula: a fabulous old property, shabby chic interiors filled with auction and boot-sale finds, a wide choice of characterful rooms, suites and boltholes, a 25-mile menu big on produce from the kitchen garden. What is exceptional here are gardens created from the mid-1950s by Rosemary Verey (take a guided tour, stay for lunch). Bedrooms are spread across the main house, with more in the Stable Yard and Close annexes and around the grounds. Even the snuggest have a well-stocked larder and monsoon shower. Secluded Field Luxe rooms have an in-room bath, countryside views from a private terrace. Three hideaway suites are particularly special. Breakfast, charged extra, includes kippers, smoked trout, poached eggs on sourdough toast with smashed peas, chilli and lemon. Dine on dishes such as pot-roast chicken, wild mushroom sauce; hake, courgette, potato and butter sauce; onion risotto, Oxford Blue, pickled red onion. Or just pop down the road to little sister venue The Village Pub for a pie and a pint. There’s no standing on ceremony here.
