Washed by the Taw and Torridge estuary, this 18th-century inn was almost lost to the water when Garth and Sascha Hughes turned the tide in 2017. A £1 million salvage operation restored its fortunes as a restaurant with four chic but affordable bedrooms, and now six more in The Sailors Rest annexe on the quay. Some are very cosy; all have a tasteful simplicity with bare floorboards, a coastal palette of soft grey or sand. The more expensive have a coffee maker. In a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows, Darren Hatch’s locally sourced menus include interesting dishes such as market fish, crab dumplings, ginger and lemon bisque, mussels and samphire, alongside burgers, steak, mussels, a vegan option or two.
