Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
This 17th-century-cum-Victorian village local on the River Wey pleased our inspectors with its ‘relaxed, comfortable atmosphere’, ‘warm and welcoming staff’ and ‘hugely characterful’ interiors. Oak beams, brick floors and original fireplace offset bespoke wallpaper, vintage prints of river birds, ‘quirky elements and splashes of well-selected colour’. A ‘cosy and comfortable’ bedroom had ‘white walls, pale beams, a lovely light background with pops of colour and pattern from the sumptuous soft furnishings; an extremely comfortable bed, luxury toiletries. You can eat in the dining room, on a patio, or, best of all, in a covered area at the waterside, ‘a very peaceful setting, with the river trickling in the background. Roll-down sides, heaters and blankets meant the evening could stretch out pleasantly.’ There are pizzas in summer, while ‘an extensive dinner menu features pub classics and more experimental dishes, all ‘elegantly composed’. The flavours of gochujang-glazed pork belly with watermelon salad, and of scallops with nduja, were ‘cleverly paired’, though portions sizes were also on the elegant side. ‘Biscoff cheesecake, vanilla ice cream and caramelised banana was a highlight.’ Breakfast brought ‘perfectly cooked’ eggs Benedict.
