With views over farmland to the South Downs behind and the A283 to the fore, this 300-year-old inn is another winner for Butcombe Brewing. Inn rooms are reached by steep stairs, while some in a ground-floor annexe have a private terrace. All have contemporary styling, Bramley toiletries. You can sink a pint in the bar, while in the restaurant, along with burgers and fish and chips, more exciting options might include za’atar-crusted halloumi, beetroot hummus, crudités, pomegranate molasses; stone bass, heritage tomatoes, butterbeans, crab and chilli butter, sherry vinaigrette and basil; venison with spiced red cabbage. Sunday roasts are exceptional, too, and it’s a handy base if you're going to Goodwood.
