The Wensleydale Heifer
Yorkshire
A 17th-century coaching inn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park combines all the best of a larky hotel with themed bedrooms, friendly bar, good service, fine wines and long menus especially strong on fish.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
‘Is it hotel, a restaurant with rooms, a pub with rooms?’ a trusted reader muses on this whitewashed 17th-century inn on the quiet A684, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Well, yes, it's all of the above, and a friendly local. Father and son Lewis and David Moss, in their 20th year as owners, run the operation with a great sense of fun. Each bedroom has a theme (James Bond has a circular bed, golden gun lamps; Heifer a cow-print four-poster, a corner spa bath with lights). Black Sheep had ‘a fridge minibar with milk and water, a bottle of Black Sheep Pale Ale. The information folder conveyed the pride the owners have in their business.’ Fresh fish arrives daily from the coast for Craig Keenan’s seasonally inspired menus of dishes such as maple-roast Whitby lobster, seafood pancake, fish and chips in three sizes (eat the ‘giant’ and win a medal). ‘Also available lamb, steaks, medallions, T bone and Tomahawk', separate vegan and vegetarian menus. 'Service was excellent, in particular by our young waitress.' The long, carefully curated wine list impresses. 'We’d love to go back.’ (Bill Wood)
