Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
An 'unpretentious country hotel charging reasonable prices' with 'excellent food' on the banks of the River Teign in Dartmoor national park, dog-friendly Mill End sweeps into the main Guide on a wave of approval. 'What a find,' writes one reader. A former flour mill, briefly home to Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, it offers a wide choice of rooms, some contemporary, with maybe an in-room bath, some more traditional, some with direct garden access. 'Our junior suite was spotless, spacious, with a huge bed, large bathroom with bath and stand-alone shower, plus a balcony with great views over rolling countryside.' You can enjoy a cream tea by a log burner in one of the lounges and 'fine dining at its best' in the restaurant. Here, a short, imaginative, daily changing menu of local produce includes dishes such as potato gnocchi, forest funghi, confit garlic or fried sea bass, saffron and chive risotto, mussel beurre blanc sauce. 'Breakfast was of a similar quality, with a great selection of cooked items, including kipper, haddock and salmon.' There is special praise for the staff, who 'never ceased to smile, and provided attentive service'. (Ian Dewey, Jenny Buckley, Mary Coles)
