In a ‘great location’ at the heart of the village, next to Corsham Court in its Capability Brown landscape, this dog-friendly former coaching inn makes a welcome return to the Guide. Public areas could be sprucer, but the bedrooms have had a smart makeover. Our inspectors’ room was ‘a nice size, with lovely décor, handmade cookies. The spacious bathroom had a wonderful roll-top bath, a powerful walk-in shower, Bramley toiletries.’ The ambience is ‘friendly, casual’. Produce from the kitchen garden features in ‘nicely presented’ pub classics and less-standard dishes. The food was hit and miss (salty mushrooms and tofu, good houmous, great parmesan fries). Breakfast strong points included ‘delicious homemade compote, croissants and light, fluffy muffins, excellent smashed avocado’.
