Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
With its own farm shop, brewery and spa barn with outdoor hot tub and sauna as well as a kiddies' playground, this 'buzzy boozer' is 'so much more than a pub with rooms', writes our inspector. Back in 2009 there were plans afoot to convert it to residential use when American property tycoon Chad Pike, from Ohio, bought it. Today it is a dog-friendly 'vibrant village hub', with settles, beams and wood-burning stoves, and beers from the onsite microbrewery. The three bedrooms above the pub are 'beautifully done out in farmhouse-chic style, with a muted palette'. The largest has a beamed ceiling and a bathroom with standalone tub and shower. A residents' lounge has squishy sofas, a wood burner and fully equipped kitchen. 'The style is relaxed and homey.' Downstairs, 'expect tasty farm-to-fork food with some interesting dishes on the menu. The salt and pepper squid with crispy whitebait was 'juicy and perfectly seasoned' while 'vegetarian options included a tasty pearl barley risotto with crispy Jerusalem artichoke and smoked applewood cheese'. The staff are 'young and enthusiastic'. On sunny weekends you can eat wood-fired pizzas alfresco. 'It's a great-value place to stay.'
