Wrea Head Hall
Scarborough, Yorkshire
A splendid Victorian-gothic mansion in parkland, minutes' drive from Scarborough, Wrea Hall has been repurposed as a luxury hotel with very characterful bedrooms and a fine-dining restaurant.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
In landscaped parkland minutes from the coast, this neogothic Victorian confection with gargoyles and stained-glass and mullioned windows was built in 1881 for John Edward Ellis MP and his wife, Maria Rowntree of the fruit gums family. Atmospheric interiors are hung with original artworks. Bedrooms and suites in the mansion and Carriage House have fine antiques, perhaps a carved English oak or teak Indian canopy bed, a modern roll-top bath and walk-in rain shower. There is a feeling of effortless luxury, while in the dining room a set menu includes dishes such as slow-cooked shin of beef, fish chowder, vegetable tagine, a tartlet made with apples from the orchard.
