Margate House
Margate, Kent
A Victorian townhouse on a seaside garden square has been reinvented as a friendly, welcoming boutique restaurant with rooms with stylish bedrooms and a short, eclectic menu, all a stroll from the sands and the town's attractions.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
A formerly seedy stucco Victorian townhouse on a ‘pocket-park’ residential square is in the pink after a boutique revamp by owner and property developer Will Jenkins. Our inspector found ‘a welcoming space’ that ‘retains the domestic feel of a house with a bit of fun thrown in. All very tasteful and soothing.' Vintage Polish movie posters and the works of local artists adorn walls painted in bespoke shades from rosy dawn to dusky. The young staff are ‘knowledgeable and enthusiastic’. Bedrooms range from large, with sea views, through medium, to ‘surprisingly spacious’ small with air conditioning, king-size bed, rainfall shower, luxury toiletries, a Roberts radio, books, fridge, complimentary jelly babies and vegan crisps. In Willy’s restaurant and on a jasmine-scented terrace, the short, eclectic menus mix old favourites such as sausage and mash with more inventive dishes. ‘A delicious starter of courgette, quinoa and sweet chilli left me pondering how to recreate it at home.’ 'Prices are reasonable with two side dishes included with your main.' Brunch includes some unusual choices. ‘The poached eggs on avocado with gochujang BBQ sauce was lovely.’ Steps and tunnels lead to a sandy beach, and the attractions of ‘Hackney-on-Sea’ are close at hand. 'Checkout is a generous 12 noon.'
