If the small village of Ferrensby was best known in the past for being near other places (near Harrogate, Knaresborough, the A1M), it can now rejoice in the status of gastronomic destination. In August 2025, Tommy Banks – who gained Michelin-starred fame, aged 24, at the Black Swan at Oldstead – relaunched this reimagined 18th-century roadside coaching inn. Under the banner of Jeopardy Hospitality, it is part of a mission to breathe new life into Britain’s dying pubs. Here you’ll find a busy bar with beams and flagstones, log burner and Windsor chairs, cask ales, Yorkshire crisps, Scotch egg with brown sauce. Eight simple-chic bedrooms each have a super-king bed, a minibar, a coffee machine which uses their own house-blend pods, an ensuite shower room with underfloor heating and Bath House toiletries. In the dining spaces and on the terrace seasonal menus mix refined pub classics (maybe chicken, ham hock and leek pie, baked-potato mash and heritage carrots) with dishes such as barbecued monkfish tail, caponata, basil, pangrattato. Sunday roasts, wine dinners, quiz nights, steak nights, goose suppers and fish and chips Fridays all add to the buzz.
